The Fear That Leads to Wisdom: Learning to Worship God Rightly

What are you afraid of?

Snakes? Spiders? Darkness? Heights?

Fear is something we all understand—but Scripture introduces a kind of fear that doesn’t push us away… it actually draws us closer to God.

If we want to grow in wisdom and true worship, we have to understand this:

The fear of the Lord is where it all begins.

1. The Foundation of Wisdom: Fear of the Lord

In Book of Proverbs 1:7, we read:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

And again in Proverbs 9:10:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

This isn’t optional—it’s foundational.

Without a right view of God, we won’t think rightly, live rightly, or worship rightly.

2. What Does “Fear” Really Mean?

The biblical idea of fear isn’t just panic or dread.

It carries both:

  • Terror (recognizing God’s power and authority)

  • Honor (responding with reverence and devotion)

We see this balance in Book of Psalms 33:8:

“Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere Him.”

Fear and reverence go together.

This is not a casual respect—it’s a deep awareness of who God truly is.

3. Fear That Draws You Near, Not Away

Worldly fear makes us run.

But the fear of the Lord does the opposite—it draws us closer.

In Epistle to the Hebrews 12:28–29:

“Let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’”

God is powerful—holy beyond comprehension.

And yet, we are invited to come near.

That tension—awe and access—is where true worship lives.

4. Trembling and Joy Together

Fearing God is not just about trembling—it also includes joy.

In Book of Psalms 2:11:

“Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate His rule with trembling.”

This is a paradox:

  • Trembling because of His power

  • Rejoicing because of His goodness

We don’t fear that God will harm us without purpose.

We fear Him knowing that His power is perfectly good and trustworthy.

5. Fear Leads to Worship

When you truly understand who God is, worship becomes the only reasonable response.

In Book of Revelation 14:7:

“Fear God and give Him glory…”

Fear and worship are connected.

Because when you see God rightly:

  • You honor Him fully

  • You surrender completely

  • You worship sincerely

6. Why This Matters So Much

If we misunderstand the fear of the Lord, we risk:

  • Treating God casually

  • Minimizing His holiness

  • Missing true wisdom

But when we embrace it:

  • Our perspective changes

  • Our priorities shift

  • Our worship deepens

Final Encouragement

The fear of the Lord is not about running from God.

It’s about standing in awe of Him—and choosing to draw near anyway.

It’s trembling and joy.

Terror and honor.

Power and goodness held together.

And when you learn to approach God this way…

You don’t just gain wisdom—you step into true worship.
