In 1 Chronicles 29:11, we find a beautiful prayer from King David, offered after a great gift had been given for the temple of God:
"Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power, and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all."
At first glance, it seems simple. Yet, there’s a profound lesson here for our personal and corporate worship: adoration is at the heart of our devotion to God.
Think about the things you naturally adore. Maybe it’s a spouse or family member. Maybe it’s a car, a hobby, or a favorite food. We naturally spend time thinking about and enjoying these things. Now, consider your prayer life—how much time do you spend simply adoring God?
Many of us use frameworks like A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) in prayer. But often, we rush past adoration, diving straight into requests or confessions. David’s prayer models something different. He lingers in adoration, pouring out his love and reverence for God’s greatness.
How to Worship by Adoring God
Here are a few practical ways to cultivate adoration in your daily life:
Focus on a Single Attribute of GodChoose one characteristic—like God’s power, wisdom, or faithfulness—and dwell on it throughout the day. For example, focusing on God’s power could look like this:
“You created all things by Your word.”
“I see Your power in the vastness of the universe.”
“I see Your power in healed relationships and restored health.”Set a reminder every few hours to pause and reflect on that attribute, reminding yourself who God is.
Use Scripture to Guide Your AdorationPick passages that highlight God’s nature and meditate on them. You might focus on passages about God’s name, His faithfulness, or His majesty. Let Scripture anchor your thoughts and shape your words of worship.
Adore Throughout the DayAdoration doesn’t have to be limited to formal prayer times. Talk to God about His character as you go through your day. This practice keeps your heart aligned with His greatness and reminds you that He is exalted over all.
When we take time to worship God by adoring Him, we recognize our place before Him—humble yet intimately connected to the One who is infinitely greater. Like David, let your heart linger in awe of God’s majesty, and let your day be a reflection of that adoration.
Worship God by telling Him who He is. Adore Him. Celebrate Him. Rest in His greatness.
